Why buy in season?

Buying in season is something that up until 20 years ago we always did. With the arrival of supermarkets we have been able to buy whatever we wanted whenever we wanted it. The downside of this is how many times have you bitten into a tomato in January, a strawberry in April and found they taste of nothing or a nearly fallen over when that punnet of cherries in November costs you £5.00?

In the last few years small farms, farmers markets, farm shops and buying in season has started to take off again. By buying in season you buy a product at its peak, the price will be the cheapest and finally you will reduce your carbon footprint as that plum has not traveled 2000 miles to your fruit bowl.

Initially it takes little while to get into the swing of buying in season and as a chef  I have become more and more aware of the seasons over the years.

Buying in season can only help the smaller producer, the local farmer and your wallet.
